My son is going to tear out rotten window casings that were made of pine.
Could one use Cypress to prevent rot? If so what about painting the wood?
Would this reduce the durability of the Cypress?
Thank you.

To be really durable the cypress has to be old growth or treated with copper naphthanate.
I built replacement shutters for my home using Cypress with a painted finish and they have held up fine for over 10 years. They replaced some Pine shutters that succumbed to the rot from years of exposure.
I used Cypress specifically for the rot resistance it offers. Paint would only add to its longevity. Hope this helps.
