    Nature Knows Best

Some years ago I worked on a construction project in Kansas. As site work was wrapping up we had to grow some kind of ground cover on about 30 acres. The architect specified 'certified grass seed' which is guaranteed to contain no weeds. Well things got a little behind and it was planted a little past the optimum date. An unusual hot dry spell killed most of the grass. Fortunately the seed contained a lot of weed seeds. Between that and what was in the soil and what blew in we got about 60% cover which was enough to keep the environmental folks from fining the project. In fall the landscaper overseeded with more of the same mix. A couple weeks later he mowed for the first time, killing some of the taller weeds. A year later it was looking good, about 50/50 grass/other. Everybody was relieved and embarrassed.

Sounds like you have about the same luck as I do, for catching the conditions just right.
