Your size requirement will drive the mechanism that will work for you. I have a small 1/2 ton Harbor Freight hydraulic table that has been well worth the money. I have seen people take the mechanism and build id into a frame with a larger top. I am not confident that the mechanism is of a quality where I would do this but, higher quality units are available.

Northern Tool Lift Table.jpg
I have a Northern Tool lift table. I added an mft-style top. It's really useful in many ways (some unexpected).
i would like to mount my 42" x 8' torsion box assembly bench to it. Something that can lift 8' base cabinet up and down for more comfortable installation of drawer slides, sanding the face frame, fitting doors and drawer fronts.
Look at motorcycle lifts. You can get pneumatic or electric for the lift mechanism.
Depending on the size you want to go, a Noden Adjust-A-Bench can be considered. Best not to go beyond about 40" wide, but can be as long as you want, more or less. Both my main bench and my auxiliary bench use this system.

The most expensive tool is the one you buy "cheaply" and often...
You might want to check out Mike Farrington's video on YouTube on a large lift table. I believe that might be what you're looking for. Good luck.
Thanks Jay. That is the lift I want.
Just before Christmas I purchased a 1200 pound motorcycle air lift based on a recommendation from someone here. It's 2 foot by 7 foot without the side extensions and 4 foot by 7 foot with them installed. I was hesitant at first but now I am sold on the new lift, at 1200 bucks with free shipping the 695 pound table is perfect for my shop. Air Lift Table.jpg
I will definitely make several top surfaces to fit a multitude of jobs and I am working on a set of castors for the front end so it will roll around easily.

Thanks Keith. Who makes that lift?
Thanks Eric. Define not cheap if you can. What size is the table?
These Husky adjustable height workbenches seem interesting, although I have no personal experience using them. It's a crank style... basically a heavy duty "sit to stand" desk, but topped with butcher block.
Definitely not as tough as other options, but also... the price is appealing and there are different sizes to choose from.
