What should I use as a wood filler?

I'm making some shaker oval boxes. I've got some gaps and splits in the cherry boxes that need to be dealt with. I need a wood filler that will not harden in the container after it's first opened. Can you recommend a wood filler that I can use multiple times? I anticipate more gaps and splits as I continue to make these Christmas presents. Thanks.

TimberMate, Jim. Water reducible. You can use it as putty or grain filler if you add some water. Best of all, if it dries in the container you can add a little water and bring it back to life as good as new. Wonderful stuff.

Do not use metal implements to apply this stuff as it will react and leave black stains. I typically use a little plastic spreader like for auto body putty.

Thank you, John. I'll be sure to use a plastic spreader to apply. I'm grateful that folks like you are here to solve woodworking problems I encounter. This solution took less than 30 minutes.
