    Yes, they should but the water in certain areas makes thatgoal harder to obtain. We had similar longevity issues with tank type here, too. While the OP's issues are primarily water related, I'll also add that the circuitry in moden condensing water heaters can be susceptible to surge damage. I had that happen with one of our tankless units about a year ago. The replacement circuitry was 2/3 the cost of an entire new unit which was a no brainer on something that was already many years in service. (I have surge protection on both of them now to help with that, although a direct lightning hit would likely still take them and a whole bunch of other things out)
