There are far less expensive spindles available out there, but I know you well enough to understand that quality matters...that's a good thing because spindles are incredibly expensive to repair it seems.

Hah, you know me well. I bought an NSK ground ball screw with C3 bearings and I’ve scrapped my plans to make the bracket from aluminum in favor of cast iron.
Looking at various bearings, I think 20mm linear ball bearings should be enough judging by what is put on other machines.

Be sure you consider that weight when you're choosing a stepper/servo to move that mount and spindle up and down. Remember I mentioned that on my CNC there's a pneumatic counterbalance to take the load of the motor? It's static pressure (doesn't "use" air) and assists with dealing with gravity. . (The steppers on my machine are 900oz NEMA 34)

Thanks Jim, I have been planning around that after our discussion. I will make this pretty heavy, most likely, so I plan up counter that with an air piston.

Some humble beginnings here.

I decided to make the support system from cast iron, on top of that is precision ground steel and the rails will mount to that. One will be set against a fixed parallel reference and the opposing side will be drawn into parallel by a series of set screws.

I dont think any of that cast iron is thick enough or will ever handle the job. Clearly under-engineered... 4" thick minimum required..... <chirp chirp>
Well, McMaster does sell it up to 2-3/4" thick . 12" x 12" x 2.75" thick piece or 2.625" x 8.25" x 24"..... I kind of want one just to see UPS deliver it.

Yea, but then you'd need to park a big diesel engine out back to power the hydraulics necessary to lift the darn thing...

I’ll start getting my straw hat fitted.
