This worked ok, 25 years with no issues. Maple I think and the legs are Elm.

Maybe a little more explanation would be useful. What are we looking at -- a chair, a stool, what? And what is the expansion solution? And why does it work?

The X brace is one piece of Maple that should expand with humidity changes. If it were made with a full width tennon it would damage the joint, and/or split the brace. This design allows it to flex to accommodate the expansion.

Why anyone should know that to be a dynamic hybrid stress relief matrix for de cure of de wood movement. A reduculator for short.
And people think it is just furniture!
