Trying out a different type of Dovetail joint

Seen this on an episode of the Woodwright's Shop...Chris Schwarz was discussing how Campaign Furniture was made...

    Corner joints looked like this...
    Dovetail Class, edge view.JPG
    Hmmmm, a dovetail joint?
Dovetail Class, dry fit 1, good corner.JPG
    Ooooo-kay....
A look at the inside, might provide a clue?
Dovetail Class, inside view, bad corner...JPG

Yeah, yeah...had a bit of chip out...First time I've done these sort of joints...pine to pract-ize a bit on..
    Dovetail Class, pull apart.JPG
    Ah...there they are....
    Lay them down?
    Dovetail Class, chip out happens.JPG

I am sure others on this site have done better ones...and will be along to show them off.....however, I am just using up some scraps of Pine, and decided to try these out...

I might just keep this going a bit, and post how I somehow managed to kill an afternoon, playing around in the shop....with hand tools....

    Stay tuned

lets see...had a scarp of Pine 1x6....a few screw holes along one edge. And, a big old knot in the middle of the other edge. Combo square to mark a line along both edges, to remove the stuff...then a bit of cross cutting..
    Dovetail Class, sawduster.JPG
Wound up with a pair of ~6" long blanks...then cut the remaining board in two...Bandsaw left wavy edges...of course, so..
    Dovetail Clas, jointer x 4.JPG
Clamped all 4 together, and jointed the edges smooth...Jack plane is sporting new handles....seems to work quite nicely, given that at one time, someone else had brazed it back together...

Back to the mitre box....needed 4 shoulder cuts made ( Schwarz did it his way, I have mine..)
    Dovetail Class, shoulder cuts.JPG
Just saw down to the line, and try not to cut it....then back to the bench..
    Dovetail Class, waste removal.JPG
A wide chisel to remove the waste..and we have the rebates done..
    Dovetail Class, 4 rebates.JPG
    Time for some lay outs..
    Dovetail Class, lay out lines.JPG
Turn this around, so I can see where I am sawing at..
    Dovetail Class, kerfs. made.JPG
And, yes, I used that Red Devil "Putty Knife" in the kerfs....seemed to work..
    Chopping block?
    Dovetail Class, chopping block.JPG
All nice and cleaned out...The next item, was to layout the tail board to match ( and NOT a through dovetail like the first try was, second try was a bit better)

Again, saw as much as I could, putty knife to finish the kerfs, chisel out the waste....and do the dry fit. had to use the mallet to assemble it.

One corner done...might as well try the other 3? Will see how these improve. Might get the hang of this...some day?

Stay tuned ( What does one call this sort of joint?)

Looking good Steven. Blind dovetails. I posted about doing them a year or so ago. I like them for drawers. Very clean looking and strong. Miter the closing joint and it looks like a miter joint but stronger. The general opinion at that time was not favorable. Everyone seems to like dovetails to show. They used to cover those dovetails with cockbeading to hide them in the past.

I think it is the Newman Hidden Dovetail.

Ok...Day #2 of the Dovetail Class for me....Was looking for an easier way to layout out the angles....hmmm....maybe..
Dovetail Class, Day 2, angle marker.JPG
have you ever noticed the ends of one of these bevel gauges? Turns out it is almost the right angle...
Dovetail Class, Day 2, better layouts.JPG
Just lay the long edge along to rebate, and mark as needed...

Then, more layouts, for lines to saw to (trying to LEAVE the lines...maybe..) then turn the board around in the vise, and use the No.68 Dovetail saw....after each line was sawn, without too much overcut...
Dovetail Class, Day 2, kerf knife.JPG
It has a very thin, but stiff blade, does not flex...nor does it split the wood ( so far)....then set up a spot the chop out the waste at,,
Dovetail Class, Day 2, one chopped.JPG
Be sure to clean the "floor" in each spot..
Dovetail Class, Day 2, four chopped.JPG
Doesn't take all that long...either. next, use this to lay out the tails...
Dovetail Class, Day 2, tails laid out.JPG
The tricky part is the places the 1/2 pins go....cutting from 3 directions...and NOT splitting things out...
    Dovetail Class, Day2, hard part.JPG
    Nothing split! Ok...stay tuned...

Was getting too many pictures...so, set this up to get the waste chopped out....had already done all the saw and knife work...
Dovetail Class, Day 2, one tail done.JPG
again, doesn't take all that long to do....have to shave a few spots....make sure that floor is flat..
Dovetail Class, Day 2, four tails done.JPG
    Then try a dry fit...
Dovetail Class, Day 2, dry fit 1.JPG
Well, the inside does look a little better....maybe? Not chipouts, at least..
Dovetail Class, Day 2, getting better.JPG
Outside corner is looking better, not quite as gappy....there was a few issues,
Dovetail Class, Day 3, end grain cleanup.JPG
End of the rebate, the one that WILL show....was slightly out of square...and also leaning a bit...Jack took care of that..checked with a square...

    Inside the rebate...90 degree corner...wasn't...so..
Dovetail Class, Day 3, rebate clean up.JPG
Intend to fix THAT during the next session....Day #3

    Stay tuned..

Well, Day 3 turned into Day 4....was too tired to work in the shop on Day 3....so
Once the ends were checked for square, AND squared up....then the fun can begin..
Dovetail Class, Day 4, better pin lay outs.JPG
Took my time, laying out the pins, this time ( tain't no rush, is there?)
    Dovetail Class, day 4, handsaw.JPG
Then a bit of hand saw work..followed by that "Kerf Knife"
    Dovetail Class, Day 4, kerfing.JPG
Being careful not to split off the 1/2 Pin, as I chopped..
Dovetail Class, Day 4, pins done.JPG
Still, it doesn't take all that long to chop out the pins...use these to lay out the tails
Dovetail Class, Day 4, tail lay outs.JPG
Yeah, this one is going to take careful chopping...
Dovetail Class, Day 4, chopping to the correct line.JPG
had the wrong line marked out....corrected that...get the waste chopped out...
Dovetail Class, Day 4, dry fit #4.JPG
And do a dry fit....mallet assisted, of course....then...PIZZA arrived! Then back to the shop, repeat all the above...and then a dry fit of all 4 corners..
    Dovetail Class, Day 4, the 4 corners.JPG
May come back tomorrow, and finish making this into a small box? We'll see

    Stay tuned....

I have a couple of tutorials on lesser used dovetail techniques - here and here.

Decided to go ahead and make this into a box....need to plough a groove for the bottom panel, and the top panel...
    Dovetail Class, making shavings.JPG
And..give an old plough plane a work out...
    Dovetail Class, plough plane.JPG
    G. Roseboom, of Cincinnati, OH. about 1864...might be more of a match plane, than a simple plough. Shavings do curl right up...and exit out the right side of the plane...
    Checked a panel for fit..
    Dovetail Class, setting a panel.JPG
get this one marked for length, and cut a second panel....
    Dovetail Class, box assembled 1.JPG
All assembled...the glue and a few clamps..
    Dovetail Class, glue up.JPG
Will let this sit overnight, then see about slicing the lid off....

Wondering IF I should set up the Stanley 45 to cut a couple of beads all the way around, right where the saw cut will be? Hmmmm...stay tuned..

Well, the clamps came off today...box was in need of a clean up..
Dovetail Class, build a box, level the top.JPG
Top needed leveled, edges needed a rounding over..
Dovetail Class, build a box, side cleaned.JPG
Gave all 4 sides a few licks with the #3 smoother...

Wanted a pair of beads, right where the lid will get sawn off...
    Dovetail Class, build a box, 1st bead.JPG
We have ways....run one bead all the way around....reset the fence on the 45..
Dovetail Class, build a box, beads done.JPG
IF I had felt up to it, would have hand sawn the lid off ( should have anyway..)instead the bandsaw tried it's best..
Dovetail Class, build a box, bandsaw cut.JPG
Trying to do the "Wave"....which meant another plane got used...
Dovetail Class, build a box, level the cut.JPG
The jack plane was long enough to span across at the corners, and level things out...

    Next up? Hinges?

Hinges: I don't like to do hinges like this, but..with the beads in the way...
Dovetail Class, build a box, hinged lid.JPG
hard to lay these out, recess for them...and assemble...at least they do work...

Then a way to keep the lid closed, besides sitting in the vise..
Dovetail Class, build a box, incise latch.JPG
Had to incise a bit...them beads were in the way, again....walked the gouge around... then chisel out the waste...
Dovetail Class, build a box, latch installed.JPG
And that just leaves doing a finish....

    As for the Stanley 45..
Dovetail Class, build a box, choose a bead.JPG
had to chose between these 2 cutters.....chose the smaller one ( #23?)
Dovetail Class, build a box, cutter installed.JPG
Then set things up in the plane. Cutter does NOT like hitting end grain, though..
Dovetail Class, build a box, top bead done.JPG
Wound up making a shallow saw cut....didn't really help all that much..

Anyway, thanks for looking in...I may just use these dovetails again.....

And...that will do it, for now...project was more about learning to make that dovetail joint..
    Dovetail Class Project, front view.JPG
Than bragging about how this or that type of screw looks in a simple pair of hinges..
    Dovetail Class Project, inside view.JPG
Project was all about HOW to do this type of Dovetail joint.....
    Dovetail Class Project, Hinges.JPG
And...next time...I will be using a handsaw to split off the lid.....bandsaw seems to like doing a wavy line...

Just a scrap of Pine, stands 3-1/4" tall with the lid closed...is 7" across the front, and 6" along each side.....

Maybe next time, I'll try to use some fancy wood (like Poplar..Ash?) and build a larger version.....this box is about the same size as the one C. Schwarz made on The Woodwright's Shop.....but, without the double beads where the lid opens......May just stash a "Tool Kit" inside mine....
    Tool Set Case, perfect fit.JPG
    Perfectly fitted, too
    Tool Set Case, opened.JPG
Just the thing, for those "cheap Phillips screws", don't you think?

thanks for looking in...was a fun way to spend a week IN the shop...and....not spend a dime doing it...

A LONG time ago. I actually tried the "Secret" Mitered Dovetail joint....in Walnut, no less....learned quite a bit....like doing the rebates on the ends..
    IMAG0001.JPG
These need to be done to all the ends...3/4" board = 1/4" rebate by 1/2" deep. This is to allow a miter cut some room...
    IMAG0002.JPG
Do NOT plough any grooves first...
    secret dovetail 2.JPG
As they will just mess up any layout going on...better to do the dovetails first, THEN worry about any groovy things going on...
    IMAG0004.JPG
This was before I knew about such things as a Kerf Knife....was getting some overcuts...mitered edge was ok, a chisel was used to make the miter there..
    secret dovetail 1.JPG
I suppose I could use the Wards 78 instead....somehow wound up with that "notch" at the base of the tails...

Thinking things would go easier IF I had laid out the pins first...
    secret mitre.jpg
    May try these again...sometime?
