    Fun with some Rosewood

Received a mailing bag with a square blank, and a 4/4 x whatever slab from a friend...I roughed out a handle blank...and had a few offcuts sitting around..so
    Fun with Rosewood.JPG
Mated up a sliver to a hornless handle/tote....allowed to dry a day (was busy watching a new furnace being installed in the house...finally going to get some heat!)
Came back the next day, did a bit of shaping and sanding...
    Fun with Rosewood, repair done.JPG
Gave it a coat of Gunstock stain...because Millers Falls liked red handles...
    Fun with Rosewood, another view.JPG
One down...then tried to make something with that handle blank..
Fun with Rosewood, Stanley tote repair.JPG
Hmmmm, Stanley No. 5 is also missing a horn, but, the handle is also broken about 1/3 up from the bottom...

Did a little research last night...even watched Paul Sellers make a "tote" from scratch.....hmm, we'll see how THAT goes...
    Stay tuned..

Despite my not working on Mondays rule....decided to at least try to drill a hole or two...
Fun with Rosewood, drilling a hole.JPG
#3 sized bit...hardest part was staying in line..with that line...
    Fun with Rosewood, drill details.JPG
It kept drifting to the side a bit...following the grain, maybe? Larger hole for the brass nut was with a forstner bit. then the shaping began...finally was able to just change out a worn sanding drum for a new one on my Dremel....got rid of the burn marks from other things...got about halfway done..
    Fun with Rosewood, halfway.JPG
Was trying to get things to line up, and fit the plane...test fit?
    Fun with Rosewood, test fitting.JPG
Drilling that hole for the "toe" bolt was...fun. Left the handle on the plane, clamped the plane in the bench vise. Strips of sandpaper, used like a shoe shine rag, to smooth things out, to where the hands were happy, happy......then a coat of BLO was brushed on..
Fun with Rosewood, sanded and sealed.JPG
Then put the rest of the parts back on the plane...
Fun with Rosewood, time to dry.JPG
And allow that smelly BLO to dry a day....while I figure which handle to fix next....
    Stay tuned...

Hmmm, repair another hornless tote? Turn a tall (Millers Falls) knob ( no lathe?)....or
    Fun with Rosewood, may replace.JPG
Maybe it's time to replace the tote on this Stanley No. 4, type 10? Tape was there when I bought it, several years ago ($8)

    Hmmm, we'll see..

Rosewood smells...funny when it gets toasty.....Act II

    Taped handle was removed..
    Fun with Rosewood, next tote.JPG
Use it to trace out a new handle...and a drill line...
Fun with Rosewood, the wandering drill.JPG
Tried drilling from both directions....still missed...Roughed out the shape..
Furn with Rosewood, not enough for 2.JPG
dang..I was hoping to get one more tote out of that slab....

Then the process of getting the handle blank to actually fit the plane.....
    Fun with Rosewood, finally fits.JPG
Finally. Holes for the rod needed widened, forstner bit holes needed adjusted...there is a small dimple of a hole on the underside.....works much better IF you just set the rod in place, THEN fit the brass nut...

Then some shaping.....roughly slice some areas out, getting a start of beveling the edges....then..
    Fun with Rosewood, shaping up.JPG
Coarse drum, speed set on "4".....then some sanding strips..
    Fun with Rosewood, sanding strips.JPG
needed to smooth out a corner..
Fun with Rosewood, just a little more.JPG
Or two....Right hand was telling me when things were"close enough"....as it will be the one handling it....
    1st coat of smelly BLO..
Fun with Rosewood, before and after.JPG
    A "before" and "after".....

    So..tote is almost done..
Fun with Rosewood, details, type 10.JPG
Wiped down the BLO tomorrow...and see about a top coat.

Which brings up the front knob..
Fun with Rosewood, Type 10 Stanley.JPG
Whether to simply strip and refinish....or...try to turn a replacement knob....?

What I may do...is work out the "problems" on another knob..
    Fun with Rosewood, knob details.JPG
This is from a Type 11 No. 3 Stanley....a bit rough?
    Fun with Rosewood, next item.JPG
Ah...you could say that....may try to make a replacement of this one,,,and then see about doing the "Low Knob"

Problems? Well, for one, there is no lathe in the shop....
    Stay tuned....

Shopping day today...Payday!....then took the rest of the day to rest up....hope nobody minds....

Maybe tomorrow,eh? Like..remove as much waste as I can, before taking the blank for a spin on the drill press....may drill the forstner bit holes first, then the through bolt....

Too tired right now, to work IN the shop....unsafe.

Knob replaced..Sears Craftsman jack plane (Millers Falls No. 14)
Fun with Rosewood, new knob, fixed tote.JPG
Tote was repaired...glued a wedge to replace the missing horn..
    Fun with Rosewood, Craftsman Jack.JPG
Then, shaped the new horn, find the hole for the bolt, again....give both handles a coat of BLO..
    Fun with Rosewood, tote shaped.JPG
Place the Craftsman iron & chipbreaker back in the plane, and add the one-piece Craftsman lever cap...
Fun with Rosewood, Craftsman is done.JPG
Waiting on the BLO to cure...before a top coat...

Not sure which plane will get repaired next...we'll see...

    Stay tuned..

    BTW: that Craftsman jack?
    West Liberty, 3, 4, and 5 planes.JPG
Is that jack plane in the background....

There is a Stanley No. 8 in the til, minus it's tip of the horn....may try that out next? Then see IF any others need work.

That Craftsman Jack seems to be a post-WW2 era type 2, Millers Falls.
    West Liberty, Trophies.JPG
Trying to remember how much I paid for it, back in September...other 2 planes? Sargent No. 408c VBM (#3 size) and a Stanley #4, Type 20? ( before the blue paint/and plastic handles)

I am very impressed with them so far. I am hoping that you are able to make one of the round knobs. Chris has a lath...... Do you even know how to turn? I have done some heavily supervised turning but I don't really know how to turn.

Old lathe I had is long gone....motor issues. Tools were traded away for a stack of Ash lumber. Next will be the horn on that Stanley No.8....Type 7.

Have enough of the square block to do 2 more knobs.....maybe IF I need a new knob made....
