    Mission style table

Some good friends asked if I could make a small hall table for their new cabin. They provided a picture of what they liked...mission style, I guess. They wanted it made from reclaimed knotty pine siding from their old cabin. I haven’t made anything in that style before, so it was a nice change.

The wood was decent 3/4” thickness, but shellacked on the show side and unfinished on the back side...everything a bit cupped. Found the flattest pieces to use for the top and shelf. Rip cuts for the other pieces left me with pretty flat usable stock. Delivered it last week. Never did get a “final” picture, but here it is in the finishing stage.

I’m not thrilled with my leg glue up...could have done the 45 degree method, or cheated and bought some 12/4 knotty pine. But in the end, the glue lines sort of complement the side slats. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Great table and a great story. I sometimes think I enjoy the odd-ball one-off pieces that stem from requests like yours than I do my own designs.

Very nice table Phil. And I like that you carried the side slat motif to the glued up legs. That would be my story as well.

Can’t believe I missed this one. I like the mission style with the cabin vibe. The legs are clearly a well thought out design element that was flawlessly executed.

Nice design and execution. I don’t think the glue lines hurt. The hard lesson I have had to learn is let the customer have his way as long as the piece will last.
