Certainly pretty better than the concrete blocks.

Sandboxes (for isolation from a suspended floor and low bass dampening) of Walnut veneer with solid Cherry legs.

Now I’m reminiscing! Add acoustical padding on the walls for zero sound stage and I wish my ears could still appreciate it!

Plenty of music happens where we can still hear.
It liberates us from spending outrageous sums on tweeters.

Even mono stuff sounds terrific, for peanut$.

After 41 years of marriage, I have very selective hearing! After 41 years of marriage, I could never get away with things I did for sound, that I did in my college and post-college days! In any case, I always cottoned towards a warm mid-range, basically the "East coast sound" (or air suspension speakers!).

Very nice! Next up, a quadratic diffusor in matching wood for the opposite wall!

Yeah they do look pretty darn nice. Just how much amp does it take to push those speakers?

For a long time, with their 97dB efficiency, I used a 1.8 Watt UX-45 amp I built, a direct descendant of the circuit from the first "talkies" speakers used in theatres and many console radios of the 30's. The UX-45 output tube is a "directly heated triode" and excels at low distortion.

It sounded great but was unable to convey the full power of the orchestra so 5 years ago, when I came across an update of the classic Mullard 5-20 EL-34 circuit from 1954 using KT-88 output tubes and more modern internal components, I built these 60 Watt mono-blocks, currently in use, which really get the best from the speakers:
