I went on a humidor kick

So I was originally asked by a good friend to replace his present humidor (a plastic bag with a boveda) with something a little flashier. I found a lovely article in fine woodworking and went to town. They’re all constructed out of Spanish cedar, birch plywood bottoms and 1/2” MDF lids. I decided to use shop sawn veneer for a little extra freedom with sanding, and I went with traditional hammer veneering and hot hide glue. The finish is a couple coats of shellac with 10 coats of emtech 6000 gloss lacquer and polished to the maximum. The first Is quilted maple with cocobolo trim, the second is Brazilian rosewood with mun ebony trim, the third and fourth are pommele sapele with mun ebony, the fifth is quilted maple and East Indian rosewood, and the last one is claro walnut burl and ebony. Humidors are my favorite project, instant appeal and so many creative opportunities. This post is from my phone, sorry I’m advance for the formatting disaster.

The insides are all the same, they’re all 50 counts and set up for boveda. All the same pin latch and brusso quadrant hinges

Eye candy. Beautiful figured wood, thoughtful design, well executed construction. Congratulations and welcome to SMC.

    Those are stunning!

I've seen articles in the past, maybe the one you referred to, that used Spanish cedar and veneered only the outside face. I was always concerned about that, having always read that one should veneer both sides of a substrate. This seems to work, though. Is it due to the thickness of the sides? or because it is a box, rather than a flat panel? How thick was the veneer?

I think it’s because the Spanish cedar is so stable with humidity changes. In addition to the 9/16” thick sides I spray a coat of lacquer on the inside prior to placing the 3/16” lipped liner for the seal, that may help too. By the time I’ve thicknessed the veneer it ends up being around 1mm thick. That seems to be the sweet spot for the hide glue, I also give it a good soak in veneer softener prior to hammering it on, any thicker and the corners seem to come up on me. Given that I’ve only been in this hobby for a year and a half, this whole process has been going with the flow a bit. I’ve had to trial and error a lot of it. The article i used is from a professional humidor maker, he addresses the veneer one side thing, it’s a free article for those of you that don’t subscribe to fine woodworking.

Beautiful work, Justin. I too, have this on my bucket list. Can you explain the grid on the inside of the lid...is that the humidifier? Thanks for sharing!

Most new humidors use the boveda system, that holder in the lid is magnetic and holds two size 60 boveda packs. With a good seal that’ll last a 50 count humidor 4-6 mos after seasoning. Nowadays I use the boveda butler, a Bluetooth hygrometer, which is super slick too.

I was going to make one, but that bad boy is 35$ on amazon and is super high quality. Not worth it for me to make one myself.

Fine humidor collection. Much higher quality than my 2 store bought units. I got some work to do.

    Beautiful work!
Can I ask where you sourced the latches?
