My mother worked on the Manhattan project in oak ridge. The FBI forced them to stop referring to it as "podunk". They thought that sounded too interesting to spies who would then investigate. Her, and many others, mailmen could not read. They just matched up numbers as best they could and any leftover was dumped off at the last address to be sorted out and delivered by the occupants. She thought illiteracy was a job requirement for postmen there.
