    Inlay advice on dining table

I'm going to start making my new dining table soon and was thinking about breaking up the monotony of the maple top with an inlay. The table will be 50-52 inches square and I was thinking about thin contrasting wood strips going around near the outside edges. My question and concern is could there be a problem with the inlay strips that run along the cross grain sides due to normal shrinking and expanding of the top. And, if not, are there certain species of wood that would work better.

Yes, that could be an issue. You might consider running the grain direction of the strips the same as the wood they're inlaid into. For thin strips like that, you really don't see the grain direction. You just see the color contrast. Cutting those strips is a little dicey, but if they break, you just glue them in the inlay channel anyhow. The surrounding wood will hold them together.
