I'm going to start making my new dining table soon and was thinking about breaking up the monotony of the maple top with an inlay. The table will be 50-52 inches square and I was thinking about thin contrasting wood strips going around near the outside edges. My question and concern is could there be a problem with the inlay strips that run along the cross grain sides due to normal shrinking and expanding of the top. And, if not, are there certain species of wood that would work better.
