    Monkey Pod slab top

Hate slabs? Well, I kinda do too, but this client was a good friend, and this was locally grown monkey pod from Saint Croix, and it intrigued me. I only do paid work if it is something that interests me and provides a challenge. This slab was too small for the opening, so I added a cubby hole
to fill in the gap, and filled the smaller gap in the back with darkened epoxy. Wood was spritzed with denatured alcohol for the photo.

The slab started at 3.5” thick, and she wanted it taken down to 2”. I didn’t know that until
after I agreed to the project. That was no fun taking 1.5” out of a slab. She wanted it the same thickness as the counter tops. Bow ties and cubby are Ipe.

I also did this one for the bathroom with Purple Heart bow ties.

She was supposed to get the sinks that sit on top of the counter. She didn’t. She got ones that mostly set into the counter. Two bow ties were removed when cutting out for the sink. One was cut into, and you can see how well it was inlaid, which I was proud to see.

Beautiful piece of wood. Nice job making it all work.

Were you able to resaw it to 2" or did you have to plane/router it?

Makita 6 1/4” planer to roughly flatten it, followed by router sled to mill it down, and then the #8 for final truing.

Wow, gorgeous. I, too, am not a huge fan of the live edge look but I appreciate beautiful wood and that definitely is.

That is one impressive router sled you have there.

Thanks. Here is a thread showing the router sled. It also is a track saw table.
