wipe off ink / marking material for straight edge?

I have some nice straight edges, with thick edges.
My goal was to wipe some type of marking ink, or marking material such as chalk like material on the metal straight edge...
then drag the straight edge over a board so the marking material will deposit on the wood high areas...
has anyone tried this? what type of marking compound used?
seems like a great way to quickly see high spots...

    Try coloured chalk instead.

I'd try a sheet of carbon paper between the straight edge and the wood. You ought to get darker smudges on the high spots. Yes, you can still get carbon paper, although it's mostly called graphite transfer paper now....

You can buy graphite sticks from art shops. they look like Allen keys, failing that a carpenters pencil might do the job.
I have an aluminium plate that I scribble onto for this, makes a very useful tool for paring mortise walls or tenons and all sorts of stuff.
Never tried this method on steel though...

Common technique used in scraping to accurately flatten metal surfaces. However a straight edge will probably not be wide enough to pick up twists in the wood me thinks.
