    Hardwood Laminated to Plywood

    Hi all,

I read a couple of the forum discussion on this, but didn’t find an answer that gave me the confidence to move forward.

I have some 25mm Baltic birch. I also have some thin leftover cherry, ash, and walnut (about 1/8” thick). I was thinking about creating a detailed mosaic overlay on the plywood. I would guess the hardwood would be about 3/32” when its finished. Do you think that would be stable?

    Thanks,
    Chip

Chip, "thick veneer" is usually ok with laminating, especially when the pieces are small. It's a common technique to create decorative items like game boards and other items. I've gotten away with 1/4" thick trim on veneer plywood casework for faux frame and panel with no issues for the high end tack trunks I occasionally build for clients.

In addition to what Jim said, you should apply the same thickness veneer to the reverse side of the plywood to avoid bowing with humidity changes. Use the good stuff on the show side & the reject stuff on the back.

Thanks, that’s just the info I needed.
