Definitely not in backwards. Made that mistake a few years ago and the effect is immediately and violently noticeable. That's not the case here. I'm still going with garbage blades, did about 200 feet of the same knotty figured oak today and planer is working better than it ever has with the honed freuds.

Well, not much left , all the easy guesses ...used up! Only thing left for me is: I wonder if a segment feed roller was
involved . Those thing are kinda funky .

Hmmm....So I'm in the process of changing the gearbox lube, haven't done it in years. Popped the cover off and the main drive chain (the one that goes from the motor shaft to the twin gears above it) has QUITE a lot of slack. Not enough to come off, but definitely slack. There is only a tension roller on the top twin gear chain. I don't think this has anything to do with anything, and I'm not going to start chasing ghosts in the planer, as the frued blades seem to be working fine. No gear teeth look stripped or worn down.
