Just a box, to hold a block plane

And....not "Fine Furniture". Thought I'd try a few things differently....finger joints were getting boring And, A different way to do the lid, would save a few slices of stock....so instead of a Double Box sort of thing.....

Anyway, laid out a few pieces...

Resaws were a bit..."off"..we have ways, now...
    Dovetailed Plane Box, flattening parts.JPG
Takes a while, when just getting see-through shavings.....
    Dovetailed Plane Box, marking knife.JPG
Pins first (needs cleaned up) then use them to lay out the tail...
    Dovetailed Plane Box, tails cut.JPG
Dry fit, to see if the Stanley No. 18 still fits...
Dovetailed Plane Box, test plane's fit.JPG
Then set up the stanley 45 to make a groove...
Dovetailed Plane Box, grooved for lid.JPG
Only one end gets the stopped groove...
    Dovetailed Plane Box, stopped groove.JPG
Other end will be a bit...different. Groove is for a lid to slide in...

    Stay tuned, for more details...

Not quite the usual suspects, as far as tools go....
    .Dovetailed Plane Box, toys.JPG
Wood parts being smaller....marking knife can be smaller, too.
One square set to the thickness of the stock...the other set for the width....the saw?
    Dovetailed Plane Box, pins first.JPG
Seemed to be better suited for this job, than my Disston No. 4. Handle still bothered my hands, though...
Stanley 45 was set up with the skinniest cutter they made for it.....was unable to use the sliding stock...too fat...
    Dovetailed Plane Box, tiny cutter.JPG
Depth set to 1/2 the thickness of the boards, with a bit between the groove and the edge of the board......somewhere in the middle of a pin.....holdfasts used?
    Dovetailed Plane Box, holddowns.JPG
Had to bevel the edges of the "lid"...
Dovetailed Plane Box, test fit, lid.JPG
Test fit.....needed the one end completed...
Dovetailed Plane Box, dry fit, lid.JPG
In order to size the lid for fit...to where it will slide in and out....the other end?
Dovetailed Plane Box, end and handle.JPG
Larger piece will get dovetailed in place....needed to find out how high to make the end, so the lid will slide by. Skinny piece, will make the handle.
    Dovetailed Plane Box, bottom sized.JPG
A thin Pine blank has been sized to fit the bottom of the box, will just glue it in place.

Today, being a Monday, and Decoration Day to boot, shop is closed .....may start in tomorrow?
    Stay tuned....

Waiting on Lunch to settle, and the floor of the shop to dry out....Lots of rain last night....Dungeon Creek was on the rise....may have to go look for a Shop Fan, to keep the shop cool.....starting to get a bit warm and sticky, weather-wise.....hard to do tiny dovetails, with sweat running down my glasses....

Plan is to dovetail the other end, and try for a glue up.....will attach the bottom afterwards....5mm luann plywood scraps I have in the shop, as they don't burn too well in the firepit.

So..maybe a later time, today? In case of the Boss wanting to go "shopping"...

Wasn't a great day in the shop, today.....Monday again?

Was going along nicely, joints were coming together nicely, enough...
Dovetailed Plane Box, dry fit corner 1.JPG
Red circle shows where the lid will slide in at. "Concentration, slip away.." and you mind up with ..this..

.Dovetailed Plane Box, wrong way pins.JPG
And because I went ahead and made the cuts.....I had to re-do both the side piece and the end piece..

Was just about done, one more tail to chop......this part of town had the power go out...and no lights IN the shop.... Ever have one of them days....

Dovetailed Plane Box, lid and handle.JPG
More "fun", made the handle for the sliding lid....then trim the lid for length...
Dovetailed Plane Box, test fit lid and handle.JPG
Dry fit....which end has the handle?
    Dovetailed Plane Box, bottom panel.JPG
Made sure the bottom was large enough...because...
Dovetailed Plane Box, enough clamps, maybe.JPG
Glue and clamps...will add the bottom panel, tomorrow. Lid?
Dovetailed Plane Box, lid glue up.JPG
Also got a bit of glue ...and a single clamp.
Made a royal mess of the bench, too..
    Dovetailed Plane Box, messy bench.JPG
So, swept the floor, and called it a day..
    Stay tuned

Maybe after Lunch, today...I can remove the clamps, clean things up....and then glue the bottom to the box. May just use the vise on the bench as a clamp.....IF I can keep the two parts lined up.

    Stay tuned

    Glued the bottom in place....
Dovetailed Plane Box, too many clamps.JPG
And let it sit in here, all day.....then, this evening, out of the "clamp" and do a bit of clean up..
    Dovetailed Plane Box, clean up.JPG
Until things looked good enough for a plain old Pine box..
    Dovetailed Plane Box, side 2.JPG
    Then slid the lid open...
    Dovetailed Plane Box, lid opened.JPG
Rub a candle along the bevels of the lid....then, to make sure the wax was spread out in the grooves..
    Dovetailed Plane Box, lid shut.JPG
Just slide the lid shut, a few times

Letting the stain dry overnight..and will see IF it needs a second coat.
    Stay tuned...

    I am recycling old trays....
    Block Plane storage boxes, 5.JPG
That I can just stack up on a shelf under the top of the bench...
