NC red slaw recipe - how much sugar?

The web page https://www.asouthernsoul.com/bbq-red-slaw/ gives a recipe recipe for red slaw that calls for a lot of sugar:

    Ingredients

    • 4 cups cabbage - finely chopped
    • 2/3 cup ketchup
    • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
    • 1/2 cup sugar
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon pepper
    • dash of hot sauce

In my time in NC, I don't recall anything put on hamburgers or barbeque that was so sweet. Could "1/2 cup sugar" be a typo?

That recipe is for Lexington NC style slaw. YUK! We don't use it in the eastern part of the state. Sugar is about right, as both ketchup and vinegar are acids. In the eastern part of the state, we use Dukes Mayo, a little vinegar and sugar (usually equil amounts,) and some celery seeds. Some add some mustard and buttermilk to basic slaw. Do a search for "Lexington style slaw recipes."

I asked my wife, the best cook in the SouthEast. She thinks that much sugar is appropriate for that quantity of cabbage for that type of slaw.
