Thread: Finding a set of wood augers for hand brace

I got a full set of Irwin's on E-bay for about $100 with shipping, and in original box. I cleaned up the minor rust on a few of them in an couple of hours.
I have no idea where a hand tool meet would be around me, and I don't have time to go to estate sales or flea markets/antique stores. Though I'd love to find the buckets of vintage tools some folks reference for mere dollars, I got my brace on e-bay as well. Worked for me.

I noticed that most of what's available are Irwin pattern bits, followed by Jennings pattern.

    What is your preference?

Does anyone use less common patterns?

I had a chance to get a few bullnose auger bits. Has anyone used them?

The Jennings pattern is a little nicer in my opinion. The double spiral supposedly helps to keep them straighter while boring.

Greenlee bits are also good bits. A lot of my regular users have no brand or are of unknown makers.

There may be one 1/2" auger in my shop of the bullnose variety. They do not bore as clean a hole as a good double spur auger.

Do a lot of watching for auger bits. They tend to go fast when they are listed.
