New to Oak, first project

I have been doing some pine cabinet type stuff with mostly plywood but I tried my hand with some oak I had gathering dust.
Red oak top and white oak sides and softwood dowels. A friend of my daughter did the wood art and came out awesome..

I'm new to oak, too. I had a scrap of white oak and I've made a couple of 5" handwheels out of it. They're turning out nicely.

I wasn't familiar with the smell of the oak dust. It's quite distinctive.

John can you please explain how you fabbed the "flooring" look on the table top? I have never seen that done on a piece of furniture and it is intriguing. Thanks for sharing, and yes, white oak has a smell all it's own for sure. Had to edit to pass on my commendations on the artwork and the art. Well done.

What is it you guys don't like about the smell of white oak? It's what many wines are aged in, and some bourbon, and even some beer these days. That qualifies white oak as one of the most noble of woods in my book.

Not that white oak has a bad smell John, just that (to me) it has a very unique smell that I can identify with the first whiff of it after it is cut, planed, etc. While other woods have a smell, nothing (in the domestic furniture timber line) is as strong as white oak in my opinion.

Black walnut is pretty pungent to me, and sassafrass is amazingly fragrant.
