Q: Anybody know where Jim is?
A: Probably in the shop looking at that beautiful workbench top he just finished.

Stunning. Absolutely stunning. I once read that a shop should be a place you look forward to returning to again and again. That workbench top is so beautiful that I imagine you stopping in the shop just to gaze at it. Nice Jim. Very nice!!!

Rather precise bench top Jim, is that an optical illusion or is the bench top tapered? If so what benefit is that? Not seen Purple Heart for a long time. How long will the new one last?

Nice work! For a second, I thought your meal was a dish of Cincinnati chili.
Rustic? Well, no. That was not my intention!

There is no taper anywhere...not sure what you are referring to, but it's likely something wonky with a photo. It's a 1680mm x 775mm rectangle 80mm thick.

No, I was babysitting the CNC machine, so that's a Stouffer's mac 'n beef quickie meal. It's a best practice to not leave a running CNC machine unattended so lunch in the shop was necessary that day.

I have been checking in daily and somehow managed to miss this until now!?! Your usual great execution Jim; it look terrific. Thanks for the great journal as well. I have lusted after the Noden hardware for awhile but, just never made the leap. Your top looks great and should serve you well for many years. Has anyone asked you what the secret compartment is on top of your Noden work table? I probably missed that too.

Glenn, see my Project thread about the Down-Draft table/auxiliary bench which uses the new, more affordable Noden Adjust-A-Bench "Craftsman Hardware Package".

    Thanks for your kind comments!

The white strips near the edge look tapered! Wow that is thick.

The "white" is sapwood in the cherry panels. They are both exactly the same width end to end.

Yes, 80mm is just over 3" but it's only "solid" at the vice end. The cherry panels with the grid are a hair over an inch thick and the waterfall ends make it look solid at first glance. The majority of a bench for the kinds of things I'll use it for don't demand that the whole thing be full thickness. Any kind of "heavy banging" I need do do can be down at the vice end, but that's a very rare need, if ever.
