Looks like a bundling board bed. In our (US) early history, when a man came courting a young woman, he may have come a long way. The family would put them together in a bed with a board, known as a bundling board, between them. They were supposed to remain chaste during the night but that didn't always happen.

In the early pilgram days almost half the first born children where premature. For some reason it dropped off sharply for later children. I have no idea why.

They always said the the first child can come anytime but all the rest take 9 months.
