Was just to resupply the Vitamin B...

happened to stroll down the aisle where all the tools seem to hang around....found a $6 hammer..

I think it MIGHT come in handy, to drive me chisels?

Will add a few wraps of black tape down at the end of the handle....lets me know when the grip is getting too far down...
Will see how this hammer does, later...

Calling that a mallet is like calling a Shetland pony a draft horse.
Even my dictionary feels different:

noun
a hammer with a large, usually wooden head, used especially for hitting a chisel.
They are easy enough to make:

Hey Jim,
I try never to hit my knuckles with a hammer or mallet. If I can keep my knuckles out of the way it gives me a much cleaner shot at my thumb.

Seems that Paul Sellers is "pushing" this type of hammer....for use with the chisels he uses.
For $6...I figured I could give it a try...beats using that 7oz rivetting (Steel) hammer that I was using....

They work great for light work.
Both of these are of oak. One from a piece of a pallet the other from a tree that came down on a local golf course.

I retired mine....it was one I turned (back when I had a lathe) out of Maple.
We'll give the Sellers version a go, for now....along with the one made with rolled up rawhide ( The Rowdy Yates Model)

Speaking of Carver's Mallets, what can I do with the wax coated horror that replaced the Lignum Vitae treasure I stupidly loaned to a knucklehead?
Get the wax off with, a) heat gun, b) hot water, or, c) ???

You might try a solvent.
You can also learn the lesson many of us learned long ago, do not loan your good tools. Among my tools are some that are what anyone who wants to borrow a tool will be offered. Some of these it wouldn't bother me if they didn't come back. Otherwise they have to pay a deposit of twice the replacement cost of the tool being borrowed in cash. This will usually ensure a quick return of a tool in good condition.

New "mallet" has been put to work...
