    QSWO Mission Blanket Chest

Just finished up this blanket chest loosely based on this Stickley chest: https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/25457/lot/11/

I would have loved to have the hardware that the Stickley has, but I could not find anything even close to it. I still need to add some lid stays, so I will post some more pics of the inside when I get them installed.

    That’s a beauty!

It would look in my 1926 sears bungalow as the trim is pretty much the exact same color.

You did a excellent job on the finish. While thing but the finish is great.

You could have the hardware made ..

Well done Christian. Love the frame and panel construction - and that figure flowing from the middle stile into the panel is mesmerizing!

Very nice Christian. And great job on the finish. What did you use? Did you fume it?

Thanks Patrick! I did give custom made hardware a little thought...but I figured it would be too expensive.

Thanks Mark! The front panels and middle stile came from the same two boards. It is possible the figure you are referring to are from the same board, but I can’t remember for sure. I tried to orient like boards together.

Thanks Bill. I did not fume it. I used Jeff Jewitt's Centennial finish schedule in the below PDF, with a slight variation. Instead of Arm-R-Seal Satin, I used ZAR flat oil based vanish. The last two projects I have used Arm-R-Seal Satin on have been too shiny, so I tried something different. While the ZAR flat does have some sheen, I like the result. It is much closer to sheen I used to get from Arm-R-Seal Satin. The finish schedule is Dark Mission Dye/Seal-a-Cell/Java Gel Stain/ZAR flat oil based varnish.

Another note on the finishing: I prefinished the pieces as much as possible before assembly. I had to do this in a few stages, and mask of some areas with tape. This allowed for easier application of all stages of the finish, especially the gel stain and the varnish. I also try to apply the varnish to surfaces that are laying horizontally. This eliminates dripping with the brush on varnish.

I do have an HVLP sprayer, but I only like to use water-based finishes with it. General Finishes indicates you can use the High-Performance water-based topcoat over the gel stain, but I am a little hesitant. I might give that a try one day, as it would speed up the process.

"Mission" accomplished (sorry). Great project and I also love the finish.
Rustic? Well, no. That was not my intention!
