Shallow NE Walnut Bowl and Cherry Tops

I was able to get some wood during a Thanksgiving visit to my in-laws in TN and made this shallow natural edge walnut bowl. Unfortunately, the tree has been down for about 18 months and the bark was gone and there were a few punky areas. It is amazing to me how much the color changes in walnut - the second photo is another bowl from the same tree, but taken and turned shortly after the tree came down.

I have never used a spindle gouge much and have been trying to learn since I seem to get catches more with it than any other tool. After reading in Richard Raffan's book, I made a bunch of tops yesterday as practice. I'm feeling much better with the spindle gouge, though still need practice, but had a lot of fun and my kids love the tops!
