Wondering if anyone has used a heat gun to warm the oil/wax mixture after application to the cutting boards in order to (maybe) increase penetration and (maybe) protection. Thanks

Rustic? Well, no. That was not my intention!
I have. It helps; just don't go nuts with the heat. Best to use your bare hands. That way you'll instantly know if things start to get too warm.

A "double boiler" type arrangement with the container of oil and wax in a water bath is how I've done this. I have an el-cheapo hot-plate and a thrift store sauce pan in my shop for the (rare for me) moments when I need the capability. I've also used it to warm other types of finishes over the years, too.

The most expensive tool is the one you buy "cheaply" and often...
Am I the only one who thought from your post's title that you were proposing mixing heating oil with wax and applying it to cutting boards?
I would not recommend that.....
