I have had a shop vac as a central vac for a few years. I added a barrel cyclone. The air stream comes in in a 4" pipe, aimed to swirl. The air goes up and over an inner baffle, and out a 2" pipe to the vac. Only the finest dust gets into the shop vac. It sits outdoors, where I don't hear it. I don't have neighbors.

Recently I have been using a lot of Sapele. I have had to clean the cloth filter in the shop vac every day. I have made some other dust collection improvements, but was stuck on how to improve the central vac.

Every Thanksgiving, our extended family sits down after dinner and watches a movie together. This year, the younger adults chose something called The Human Centipede. I won't spoil the plot, but lets just say the movie gave me the idea of hooking up shop vacs in series to improve suction. It works great. I might get parts and put a T in the line, so they will be parallel.
