    I'll second the fiber with an additional comment, for not much more than the cost of a new media converter, you can pick up a switch with SFP+ (10gbps) ports, something along the lines of an aruba S2500 (~$130 for 48 gigabit ports and 4 10gbe ports) and gigabit ports that you could potentially use to upgrade to a 10 gbps backbone. Used mellanox 10gbps fiber cards can be had on ebay for ~$15 last I bought a few.

    Not that you probably need 10 gigabit and it is a little more complicated, but it may be surprisingly cheap, and based on quality enterprise hardware if you are entertained by that sort of thing.
