I like your concept of 50 cent throw away handplanes. One stops working just throw it over your shoulder and go get another one.

Actually...not. I usually have a pair of each type of bench plane....when one does have a problem..#2 fills in until #1 is fixed and ready for work. If one gets a bit dull during a project, it's twin can take over.

Usually, when between projects, I can have a "sharpening day". Maybe clean them up a bit....then back into the til, until needed again.
