    Laguna 18/47 older lathe

I'm going to pick up this lathe next week. I got it for 850.00 including a bunch of bowl blanks. Does anyone have this lathe and know if it is a good one? The model is A175017. There is also a trees worth of pecan cut up in pieces not in the pics.

Where did I put those band aids?

  2. I had its twin......the Grizzly G0698 18/47. I used it heavily for about 5 years, sold it to one of the turning clubs I am a member of, and they have used it regularly for classes, skills development days and anyone who just wants to use it to turn. It has performed flawlessly, without a hiccup all these years........about 12 or so. Mine had a 2 hp D/C servo motor on it, and some of the Laguna's had a A/C motor........not sure which yours has, as the pics do not show the motor. Either way, it is a good lathe, if you got one without problems for the original owner.

Just run it through its paces, and there are parts available.......Laguna or Grizzly are likely interchangable. I have two larger Grizzly lathes in my shop now, so as you can see, I have had VERY good service from all three that I have owned, and believe them to be one of the best values for a larger lathe out there on the market.

The layout of the headstock controls looks identical to my Grizzly G0766. Perhaps they shared the same mfr.

They did indeed, Brice. Same manufacturer for the G0698 18/47, Laguna 18/47, and several European & Asian labels, even Baleigh had this lathe with blue/white paint scheme. The Burt Group is the manufacturer, and they put different labels on it depending on the vendor who places orders with them. The G0733, and G0766 are from the same company.
