    Flame Retardant Lumber for Navy

For defense industry shipyards in close proximity to ships
Does anyone have first hand experience with wood meeting flame retardant specs for naval shipyards?

I have a MIL-Spec (not at my fingertips) but often shipyards go beyond mil specs for safety.

I think I have a handle on plywood but dimensional lumber is not as clear.

For this project I am not building, only designing and specifying.

When I worked in exhibits, we often had to meet fire proofing standards. Solid wood was always some variant of pressure treated. We also used some sort of fire retarding paint.

There are additives for paint to bring it to fire retardant levels. We used a lot of it on stage scenery. Rose Brand is a supplier. 800-223-1624 is one location

I did suggest ablative paints in addition to treatment.

I have my notes now MIL-I1940E is the mil spec.

I think that should be MIL-L-19140E. You can access it here: http://www.woodencrates.org/standards/MIL-L-19140.pdf

A google search for Fire retardant construction lumber will bring up a number of sources for fire retardant lumber. Oriented strand lumber seems to be fire retardant. Hoover Treated Wood Products also has fire retardant ratings
