I served on DE 252, The Howard D Crow during the Berlin crisis

I was a Quartermaster third class at the time.
It was out of the Key West Naval Base and we trained sonarmen.

I remember one day we saw the first atomic powered sub on the surface making 30 knots and throwing
    a rooster tail.

Thank you for your service, Lowell.

I was young and really enjoyed it. I saw things I never would have even known about.

  5. Growing up in Europe as the continent emerged from the Cold War I was always imbued by my parents with a deep sense of gratitude for the allies and their sacrifices. We grew up in freedom and prosperity because of it. Thank you.

    Lowell,

First, thank you for your service! My father served on the USS Lake DE 301, in the Pacific Theater during WW II. I'm sure you know there's a DE dry-docked in Galveston. If you are ever near Albany NY, the USS Slater is berthed in the river there and is wonderfully restored. When my wife and I toured the Slater a few years ago, I got a whole new appreciation for what my father and all the DE sailors went through! A ship as long as a football field and just a couple yards wider than a first down, with 200 men on board! Thanks again for your service!
Don't let it bring you down,
    It's only castles burning,
    Just find someone who's turning,
    And you will come around
