    DVD Cabinet build along...

Just something to do, rather than endlessly jousting at the windmills of the perfect edge.....decided to use a few tools...
    Ash Project Start, inventory.JPG
Already had supply of parts....but needed to crosscut a plank to make a couple sides and MAYBE a raised panel for the door...measured the spaces for the DVD cases..using a case..
    Ash 1 x 6 x 6' plank did have a nasty looking end...on both ends...removed those...mark a line.
    DVD Cabinet, square a line.JPG
Even drag a knife along the line...then use a Panel saw to cross cut...
    DVD Cabinet, saw a line.JPG
making sure I used the proper grip...
    DVD Cabinet, grip a saw.JPG
Saw is 20" long, 8ppi....have no idea who made it. Saw was sharpened by me, though...after the first few strokes, saw wanted to pull a hair to the right...a quick 2 passes with a stone....and a rub down from a candle...
    DVD Cabinet, split a line.JPG
Line is barely there...checked for square...more to see how straight the cut was..
    DVD Cabinet, check for square.JPG
    Then rinse and repeat..
    DVD Cabinet, today's work.JPG
Until I had 2 sides, and a shorter "extra" plank to make a raised panel out of...and two end chunks for kindling...and a wee bit more of sawdust..
    DVD Cabinet, real saw dust.JPG
Stay tuned for the rest of the day's shoptime...

Ok...the extra is a bit shorter than the 2 sides...will have to use it for a raised panel...IF the door frame works out...if not..
    Attachment 417629and
Still have some of this plywood. The sides?
    Attachment 417630and
    mark these as outside..and.
    .Attachment 417631and
these as the inside faces...looks like I will need to joint a few edges..
    Attachment 417632and
And flatten a couple boards...I think these will do that job..
    Attachment 417633and
Need the Stanley #4 to make this one..
    Attachment 417634and
into the raised panel. I do have a couple blanks on hand..
    Attachment 417635and
For the top, and the bottom....still working on a base detail to use...
    Wood is Ash.
Stay tuned...plane work next time I head to the shop...and see what joints to use at the corners. Shelves (2) will sit in dados, and the back will have a rebate to call home.
may try to match the colour of the Computer Desk...

Today being a Monday (grrrrr..) shop was closed for today....except to get a few photos..
    DVD Cabinet, shelf stock.JPG
Found this while moving things around for the new gas meter installation....so they could get the old meter out of the shop. Clear Poplar, should be able to get a couple shelves out of this plank

    two items need correction, one
    DVD Cabinet, tapered.JPG
Kind of tapered. One edge is a bit thicker than the other.....plane to fix...
    Two...
    DVD Cabiney, too wide.JPG
A bit too wide....needs rip to width, once I find out what that will be...

hopefully, Tuesday will be a Shop day..have a bunch of shavings to make....might see about some dovetails...to connect the bottom to the sides...1/2 blind, or through?
    Stay tuned...

Ok...2 boards to make the sides of the cabinet....needed a bit of work...
    DVD Cabinet, busy busy day.JPG
    With planes large..
    DVD Cabinet, side 2 jointed.JPG
    And not so large..
DVD Cabinet, side 1 face planed.JPG
    Checking as I went...
    DVD Cabinet, check for flat.JPG
Until both not only matched each other, but were S4S...then set them aside...jointed the edges of the blank for the bottom of the cabinet....then a wee bit of layout work
    DVD Cabinet , bottom start.JPG
One, yes I do pins first, and two, I don't have any "blue tape" to mess things up with...

Maybe tomorrow, I can get a few dovetails done?
    DVD Cabinet, usual suspects.JPG
    Just the usual suspects....

Through dovetails...for the bottom....because there will be molding around the bottom, and there will be feet under the bottom....makes sense?

Top of the case will overhang a bit...sides and front....maybe cut the front corners. So....Maybe the top can sit in either stopped dados, or..with a face frame for around the door. 2 shelves inside?

The shelves will sit in dados, as well...made of poplar, maybe an Ash strip along the front edge.

Well...that is as far as the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up has gotten....may churn out a paper "plan" later....( hope Moose, and Squirrel can deliver it)

first, I need the dovetails DONE, then layout all the rest of the parts.

    Stay tuned....

    getting these pins cut, was..interesting...
    DVD Cabinet, nasty wood.JPG
This was too bad...as that bad corner will be at the back of the case's bottom...and have a plywood back over it
    DVD Cabinet, back location.JPG
    Other end was even worse.
    DVD Cabinet, pins 2.JPG
Trying to get things lined up, to where the bad sections are the waste sections....was finally able to get all the pins done..
    DVD Cabinet, both ends pinned.JPG
Enough that I could lay out and chop the tails..
    DVD Cabinet, test fit 2.JPG
And get both sides dovetailed into the bottom of the case..
DVD Cabinet, dry fit the bottom.JPG

Lets see....blank for the top of the case...too short, too narrow...need a longer blank cut, and make it a glue-up for width...
DVD Cabinet, parts for the top.JPG
Blank that WAS going to be a raised panel for the door...is now being made into the top of the case.. Hope the plywood will be enough for the door panel...need to buy a new handy panel, to make the back of the case. Then figure out the bottom's foot details...and maybe the face frame...
Shop fan died, today...will not start back up...so..today's work schedule was just 2 hours long....will see what tomorrow brings...
    stay tuned

Took the day off, today....was too busy watching the DVDs that will go into this cabinet....need to go do a bit of shopping, Friday. After a visit with the Cardio Doctor....every 6 months...that time of year, again...depending on what I find shopping...might get a few changes....we'll see

may do a through dado under the top....then add the strips to the top...making a stopped dado. not worried about the back of the dados, panel for the back will cover those...might be a chance to fire up the Stanley 45 dado plane?

Plywood has been bought, for the back of the case. Top has been roughly cut for length, need to lay out the dados to house the case's sides. need rebates milled, to house the back. Need to make 2 shelves, and cut dados to house them. Might be a busy week?

Trying to design a base for this thing....I have the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up working on a couple ideas....Hmmm, bun feet, or fancy feet....thinking along a "Spice Cabinet" sort of thing...instead of Spices, or Tea......just a home for DVDs....

Right now, need to stay close to the "Throne"....maybe after that, I can get back to the shop...( never trust a fart..)
    Stay tuned ( and up-wind..)

Meds are helping with the "problems"....
Made a mess on the floor this evening..
DVD Cabinet, shavings from a top.JPG
S4S two parts for the top...
DVD Cabinet, blanks for a top.JPG
Trying to match the grain, too..
    DVD Cabinet, grain matching.JPG
Haven't clamped the second set of dovetails up...yet...
    DVD Cabinet, second corner.JPG
"Black gaps"? Yeah, from a black sharpie that was use for layouts...needs a hammer to get things together...a wee bit tight.
    DVD Cabinet, planes, again...JPG
Used all of these toys, tonight....along with the mitre box....
DVD Cabinet, tenon for the top.JPG
needs a bit of shoulder work...Maybe Tuesday, I can do a little more work in the shop?
    Stay tuned...

Looking like after Lunch, i can sneak down to the shop?

May set up the #78 and do a few rebates....and try the #45 for a few dados....The #78 doesn't need much in the way of a jig....the 45 will....

    Needed rebates made, so..
    DVD Cabinet, bottom rebate.JPG
Set things up to use the Ward's 78...
DVD Cabinet, end view of rebate.JPG
    Bottom of the case...and...
    DVD Cabinet, side rebate.JPG
Needed to do both of the sides, and the top...and check how the plywood will fit..
    DVD Cabinet, test fit, rebate.JPG
Then set up a plane for dados....spurs rotated down..
    DVD Cabinet, spurs installed.JPG
    Cutter selected...
    DVD Cabinet, dado cutter.JPG
    And..plane assembled..
    DVD Cabinet, dado plane 45.JPG
Top needed 2 dados, to house the tenons on the end of each side.
    DVD Cabinet, rebates done.JPG
Once they were made...I could glue the rest of the top in place..
Waiting on glue to dry, right now...
    stay tuned..
