Waited until this evening to get a little more done...too many #@##@@!## errands...lets, see...
    Poplar Box Project, corner brackets.JPG
Picked a few of these up yesterday...
    Poplar Box Project, hinges installed.JPG
Hinges were installed...screws needed a small pilot hole maker..
Poplar Box Project, pilot hole drill.JPG
Needle nosed visegrips, holding a small nail...small hammer to drive the nail in where the screws were to go....candle wax on the threads, and those two screwdrivers back there to install the screws....
    Poplar Box Project, handle install.JPG
A handle was installed on each end...
    Poplar Box Project, latch installed.JPG
    Then the latch...close the latch...
Poplar Box Project, close the latch.JPG
then installed the brass corner pieces onto the bottom corners,,time for a coat of stain..
Poplar Box Project, PIP 1 Front.JPG
Flavour is called "Gunstock" by minwax...letting this coat dry a while, then see if it will need a second coat,,,or just a coat or two of Shellac
    Poplar Box Project, PIP2 Rear.JPG
    Stay tuned.....almost done...

Box has been rubbed down, wiped off, and brought upstairs out of the shop....gives me a little more room to start on box #2...

Thinking through dovetails for the next one....finger joints get boring, after awhile...Once I get the longer piece of Poplar centered under the short one, I can gang cut both at the same time...

    Stay tuned....

4 pieces cut to lengths..2 sides + 2 ends. All edges planed til they are all the same width , end grain "shot" with just the No. 3 Stanley. 1st set of pins laid out, and ready to saw & chop.

    Then.."Time out!" Dirty Rice & "an-dewie" sausage for din-din....will return to the shop...after I "recover"...film @ 2300 hrs, ZULU...

    Planed...as in jointing the edges
    Poplar Box 2, jointed.JPG
    End grain "shot"..
Poplar Box 2, end grain shot.JPG
Had to trim one of the long sides for length..
    Poplar Box 2, trimmings.JPG
    Laid them all out...
    Poplar Box 2, 4 sides.JPG

had a few bar code tags,,,#3 took them off, as well. Set out the lay out tools...
Poplar Box 2, lay out toys.JPG
Set up one side in the vise, and marked a few "pins"
Poplar Box 2, tails laid out.JPG
Set a bit high in the vise, so I can lay things out on both faces...then drop the side down, and get the saw ready to go...
Poplar Box 2, saw set up.JPG
And made a bit of saw dust..
    Poplar Box 2, sawdust made.JPG
Just a wee bit...down low so I can sit down on my shop stool.
BRB will part 2....had to stop for the evening...cramps in the fingers, and the back of the knees....
    Stay tuned..

Part 2: Take the part out of the vise, set up the chopping station..
    Attachment 416902
Chop 1/2 down, leave a tab out at the end..flip over..
    Attachment 416903
And complete the chops. I do pins first BTW. Then use these pins to mark out the tails, and saw them..
    Attachment 416904
Easier to cut on my bandsaw, where I can SEE the lines...the more line I leave ( cutting on the waste side) the tighter the joint will be.
Chisel to remove the rest of the waste...dry fit?
    Attachment 416905
Repeat all the steps, and do corner #2..
    Attachment 416906
    two down...
    Attachment 416907
And 2 more to go. That one wide tail? with a bit of luck, that is where the groove to split of the lid will come through..been a decent enough day..
    Attachment 416908
I still have to mark where the waste is...
    Attachment 416909
On the tails..I try to split the lines..maybe a bit to the waste side of the lines.
Uncle Charles has said it is closing time for the shop...try again tomorrow, eh?
Stay tuned..Photo problems..AGAIN? Same size as in part 1...why?

Same picture size as every other thread I post on, and the same size in this thread? Getting tiresome, people. Bad day at the office? Looking for answers...

    Ok..try again....all 4 corners are now done..
    Poplar box 2, top view.JPG
I did find ONE gap, which will close up when I glue the box up
    Poplar box 2, 4 corners done.JPG
Top right corner....other "gaps" are pencil lines. When I NEED a mallet to assemble a box....yep, they be tight. When I clean up the glue joints after this comes out of the clamps, I get rid of the black pencil lines. Even got out a new pencil...
    Poplar box No.2, new pencil.JPG
Had to sharpen it up a few times, as I went along...

Next up? Reset the Stanley 45 to mill a few grooves, and cut 2 plywood panels to fit....might be getting close to a little assembly?
    Stay tuned...

Single Brain Cell Sketch Up has devised a mod to these boxes.....means I have to build a tray for each box...nothing fancy...
    assembled tray.jpg
    Something like this....

Been under the weather, the last few days...not much shop time, waiting on a couple stones to pass....may try a bit today....depends.
    fancy grain.jpg
Might have some more of this plywood, sitting around. the box in the picture?
    opened lid.jpg
Just Pine, kind of grainy, but just pine. Shop-made molding.
    closed lid.jpg
Sitting in my shop, holding small tools, hardware, screws, and nails..
    inside 1.jpg
hardest part? keeping the lid clear of stuff, so I can open it.

need to reset the Stanley 45...a few times...each side of the box gets 3 grooves inside, and one groove outside, the outside one will be after the assembled box is out of the clamps, glued up.
We'll se how today goes....stay tuned

For right now, at least....needed grooves ploughed, had to reset the Stanley 45 twice....but...
    Poplar box 2, end grooved.JPG
Second reset was for the middle groove, once I laid out where it was to go..
Poplar box 2, lid groove set up.JPG
There is a wide dovetail there for a reason.
Then cut 2 plywood panels to size...had to joint one edge, though...
    Poplar box 2, plywood jointed.JPG
    Then a test fit..
    Poplar box 2, plywood fitting.JPG
Then glue and a forest of clamps...
Poplar box 2, all clamped up.JPG
Then back upstairs, and hit the Gatorade....cramps in the feet and hands, right when I was getting the clamps on...was a busy day?
    Poplar box 2, busy day.JPG
    Stay tuned...

More about the Stanley 45. It was still set up to split the lid off the last box....which meant some things needed to be changed out..
    Poplar Box 2, 45 tear down.JPG
Long rods change back to short rods, cam rest removed (no room) moving skate's depth stop retracted out of the way...
    Poplar box 2, 45 reset.JPG
Reassemble and get to work, after putting the "extras" back in the case....8 grooves done...then had to reset the 45 again, took about..5 minutes..
    Poplar box 2, 45 reset,again.JPG
Short rods don't reach far enough, changed back to the long ones, and add the cam rest...reset the sliding stock's depth stop to 3/16".

Also, when ploughing grooves with the 45...after a groove has been started, rub the groove's sides with a plain candle. The wax in the candle will make pushing the plane through the groove much easier.
Tomorrow, when I set up to split the lid off, I'll reset the fence just under a 1/4" below the inside groove, gives things a slight over-lap. Then, maybe I can return the entire 45 back into it's case?

    Well...maybe after Lunch has settled...
    IMG_9536.JPG
Maybe I can get those clamps off, clean the outside of the box up....and see about running the outside groove around...

Soup Bowl is called Pho....not quite as good as mama-san used to make, but here in the middle of Nowhere, Ohio...will have to do...

grooves were made, after the box was cleaned up..clamps are back in the rack..
    Poplar box 2, clamp rack.JPG
45 adjusted for the grooves..and run around..
    Poplar box 2, long grooves.JPG
Then a knife to separate lid from box..
Poplar box 2, knife to split the lid.JPG
then fine tune the lid, until it fits...
    Poplar box 2, almost fitting.JPG
Then add all the hardware...and open the lid..
Poplar box 2, PIP open the lid.JPG
Then close the lid, have supplies to go out and buy..
    Poplar box 2, PIP 1.JPG
Might have this done by the weekend?
    Stay tuned...
