Another $5 plane?, Stanley No. 3, type 11?

Made a few stops this morning, checking out a few yard sales....got a discount on a plane, because...

Broken lever cap....but, I did have a spare back at the house..

That will just have to do, until I get a "perfect" replacement...the plane was a No. 3 Stanley...said so right on the toe..

Yes, there are Patent dates...

Sole looks good, too...Lateral lever has just STANLEY stamped on it, but no patent dates....

Also has STANLEY cast behind the front knob....
made an offer of $5...."SOLD!" and went back to my van...

Thinking this MIGHT be a Type 11. Small depth adjust wheel ( 0.990")

Might just be worth the effort to clean up....and look for the correct lever cap....

They also had a #4 sized plane.....front was snapped off at the mouth opening Painted hardwood handles....passed.

In my view, even if you paid the ridiculous prices for the correct replacement lever cap on that auction site, you still did great.

Took about 2 hours, start to finish, but..

had some pits along one edge...no biggie. Tote does have a small crack....rod was bent...WAS.

Iron was sharpened to 2500 grit, then stropped...lumber is Ash, Face grain...

Set back is 2mm, no gaps...polished the chipbreaker's leading edge...

If memory serves me correctly, the type 11 lever cap is unmarked, it does not have the Stanley logo cast into the face. If that lever cap is a Stanley, it may be true to type already.

Plane looks like you have it to the point of being able to make very thin savings. Great job.

Just priced a couple lever caps...$16 to $18, depending on the foundry stamp....I may just keep mine....

The Type 11/12 plane....has a SW iron on board...so, maybe it's lever cap matches the iron? It is also a #3c model....so, now I have both a Stanley #3 smooth sole, and a Stanley #3c....might see how they compare in use....

Did you ever get out of the car at a sale...and "smell" the rust clear out by the curb? And, there must have some sort of "glue" used, because once I picked that little #3 up...I just could not set it back down....ever have that happen?

Type 11 caps were plain, edges were a bit rounded, though....hmmmm...will see what happens come Payday....

I repaired a broken tote be sawing the ragged edges out of the tote and gluing wood in the space.
It was easy to shape the new wood to the handle. I put an oil finish on the repair and then applied
Johnson floor wax to the tote.
