    We have work to do

Seems I picked another Mitre Box and saw the other day....$15....
Mitre Box Saw, as it arrived.JPG
    As it came home....Saw is a 4 x 26 Disston..
    Mitre Box Saw, saw etch.JPG
Box seems complete...even has an "extra deck"
    Mitre Box Saw, end view.JPG
I might just throw both away...one depth stop was missing( my "spares box" had one) and needed a replacement for..
    Mitre Box Saw, Ooops.JPG
A broken off thumbscrew...had a spare for this, as well....
Mitre Box Saw, back side view.JPG
has both stock rests, and the 2 little pointy bolts to hold the stock still...but...note at the bottom of the guide rods? A slotted cylinder, instead of the square, three bolt blocks....
Mitre Box Saw, brass shined up.JPG
managed to clean the saw plate, and shine the brass...
    Mitre Box Saw, rusty start.JPG
Removed the "new" plywood deck, to have a look at the old deck...notice anything?
Mitre Box Saw, stock rest details 2.JPG
That little metal disc has a job to do....
    And so do I....stay tuned..

Ok..this is either an early #246 , or, an early #346. Swing arm was having "issues" about moving, or even unlocking..so...
Mitre Box Saw, going for a soak.JPG
gave it a bath in PBblaster and WD40 and let it sit for about an hour....went back out, and NOW the swing arm will move as needed...
    Also noticed another "feature"...
    Mitre Box Saw, degree markings.JPG
In addition to the numbers on top, there are degree markings down below...
Mitre Box Saw, King bolt details.JPG
King bolt detail...note the slotted cylinder?
    Mitre Box Saw, Swingarm details.JPG
And the locking end. that slot is where the base for the guide rods locks in place...
Mitre Box Saw, stock rest details 3.JPG
Need to make a new deck...and hope I get the dados as good as Stanley did...along with adding the metal disc...
    Mitre Box Saw, handle details.JPG
Hope to restore this Mitre Box & Saw to what it looked like when Mr. Millice bought it....
Stay tuned ( need to bring stuff in, from the back porch....)

seems to be a Stanley No. 346 Mitre Box, very early version...cleaned up one of the "keepers" that hold the saw up...found a "patented 1906" stamped on the arm.

Have taken a few items off of the box, and wire wheeled them clean...until one of those wires wound up in my shoe...then into the bottom of my heel....had my son use a pair of pliers to pull that wire out.

Seems the wire wheel on the grinder is shedding more than a dog in summer....went out today, and bought a brand new 6" brass wire wheel....once that is on the grinder, and I find a Tupperware tub to toss the cleaned parts in...I can get back to work. Also picked up a new deck board...1/2 x 6 x 24" Poplar....use the old deck as a pattern.

    stay tuned..

    Ok..old wire wheel...
    Mitre Box Saw, old wheel.JPG
    And..the new wheel..

    Mitre Box Saw, new parts.JPG
Board is the Poplar 1/2" x 6" x 24" for the new deck.
Mitre Box Saw, clean up start.JPG
What I have cleaned up, so far...base of the guide rods..
    Mitre Box Saw, base pin.JPG
And the pin that locks it in place..
    Mitre Box Saw, Guide, insides.JPG
Insides of the guides...no bearings, no grooves to hold wax...
    Mitre Box Saw, newer date.JPG
While the box has four 1904 patent dates, this little device has a Patent 10-5-09 stamped to it. When you raise the saw up, two of these will catch and hold the saw up...like this..
    Mitre Box Saw, Relatives.JPG
On my slightly newer Stanley No. 358..
Mitre Box Saw, owner's name stamp.JPG
Not only did Mr. Millice stamp the handle of the saw with his name ( 4 times!) he also stamped the cross bar twice, once on each face...
Maybe once I get a Tupperware tub to stash all the clean parts in, and change the wheel on the grinder...I can get a little more done?

Stay tuned...might be a week, before I can start the rehab on the $1 Sheffield saw...

Got that disc out of the deck...
    Mitre Box Saw, Cleaned disc.JPG
All cleaned up...doubt if the BORG has screws that size, with slotted heads..into the parts tub they go...
Mitre Box Saw, about filled up.JPG
Feet were removed, those bolts cleaned up...underneath the black gunk, there lies rusty gunk..
Mitre Box Saw, big parts storage.JPG
Got both guide assemblies cleaned up, reassembled and stashed away. easier to keep track of these larger parts...
    Mitre Box Saw, locations.JPG
Got these 2 stock holders out, and cleaned up..
Mitre Box Saw, stock holders done.JPG
    Then into the tub.
    Mitre Box Saw, gunky.JPG
    Deck was removed....been a while, hasn't it?
    Mitre Box Saw, more soaking.JPG
Needed to soak that king bolt overnight....and see about a drag-link to get it to budge...
Stay tuned...need to use the old deck to cobble a new one..dados and a place for that disc...hope I have the right sized Forstner bit...

Checked before the Knee Rehab this morning...hammerdrill couldn't budge it....gave it another good soaking....
Came back from my rehab, too sore, and tired...took a 4 hour nap, this afternoon ( hey, I am retired, I can do afternoon naps, right)

Checked again after the nap....hmmm, nada...flipped the frame over, cleared out around the top of the bolts threads...and soaked that end...

Will try again, Tuesday....have a few other items to clean and shine, and a few to paint. Might even see about that new deck....and see IF I have the right sized Forstner bit....or, just regrind a spade bit...
    stay tuned...

Steven, you bet you can do afternoon naps if you are retired. I hope to be there in two years.....in the meantime I am pretty much limited to Sunday afternoon naps.

I'm not retired, and don't plan to be for at least another three years (at 70), but I find time to "nod off" each day. I'm lucky to not have many aches and pains.

But I still don't understand where Steve gets his energy to work at the pace he does!

Clean & Paint, today...amongst other things....
King bolt finally decided to break free...after 4 soakings...and 6-8 hard whacks with a hammer on it's head ( WAKE UP!) then big visegrips on a big screwdriver...Uuuummmpf..CRACK.....and the bolt came out, undamaged...got lucky...wire wheeled it clean, and into the parts tub..
Mitre Box Saw, back painted.JPGMitre Box Saw, bottom cleaned up, painted.JPGMitre Box Saw, legs painted.JPG
Some pieces took a bit more...
Mitre Box Saw, frame ready for paint.JPG
Before they also saw the paint can...then, when the paint was dry...some spots were cleaned off...
Mitre Box Saw, number 3 frame.JPG
In case you are wondering..."B" is for Back....and the "3" is because this is a #3 sized frame....hidden by the king bolt...
Mitre Box Saw, Top cleaned up.JPG
Other spots were cleaned off, to allow them to work better...Small pin is what locks the swing arm in place...larger pin has a slot in it's side, to ride along on the Quadrant rail...
    Mitre Box Saw, casting number.JPG
Found this number under the quadrant....mold number, Maybe? "478"..

metal parts were done, needed to do a bit of woodworking, next....
    Stay tuned..

    Ok...woodworking time...
used the old OEM deck for two items....traced around it onto the new deck blank...and, find out which bit fit..
Mitre Box Saw, checking for size.JPG
    Ok....blank cut out...needed jointed..
Mitre Box Saw, edge jointed, deck.JPG
Millers Falls #11....was also used to flatten the face a bit..
    Mitre Box Saw, deck planed.JPG
As it had a slight cup....and, back where the edge of the board meets the back of the frame...it needs a bevel for a tighter fit...
    Mitre Box Saw, beveled deck.JPG
All done with the same plane....
Also used those dados to lay out new ones.....cut 2 dados, and drill two holes...one big, then one small..
Mitre Box Saw, Dado and disc.JPG
Them's some TINY wood screws...second hole was to allow the thumbscrew to go through the deck.
Then, keeping things lined up....flip this over into the vise...
    Mitre Box Saw, deck attached.JPG
had 8 slightly larger screws to install....used the hand powered VIX to start the holes, and the Yankee to drive the screws...Thought about "clocking" the slots..but..who is going to see that?

And that was it for the woodworking for a bit....
Next up? Time for some assembly...stay tuned

Saw in front is the Langdon No. 75.....need to clear out a junk pile...
    Mitre Box Saw, junk pile....JPG
And either move the saw til back here, or install the Stanley No. 358....may need to widen this shelf...
