    Jewelry Box

"What's the best kind of wood?"

    Answer: "Free Wood!"

A friend gave me a bunch of wood, including some teak which I used for a variety of things, including some cutting boards.

Some of the wood is a species that I couldn't even guess what it is - but some of it had some nice figure and it would polish up nicely. I chose some of the nicest wood and made a jewelry box for his wife as thanks for the gift. Here's how it came out.

You can see the grain running around the box. I made a tray for the inside. I videoed the making of the box and posted the videos on my website (warning: the video is in three parts, each almost an hour). The production has some problems - I have to set up the camera and then show the work. If the camera is a bit off I don't know it until I review the video.

Absolutely beautiful. Well done, Mike! Don’t be surprised if he gives you a lot more wood

Gorgeous! That's a place where running the grain around the box really looks great!

If I weren't so far away I'd "steal" your friend.

Any problems with wood movement with the solid top glued on like that?

I've made a bunch of them and never had any problems with wood movement on the top. I think it's because the top isn't that wide - 8 inches in this box.

I did find that I needed to leave 3/4 inch on the sides of the top - that is, cut the top off 3/4 inch from the bottom of the glued on top.

I love how the grain follows around the sides. I recently screwed up a project with continuous grain. Item to pay more attention.
