What happens when the brick lands on the bottom of the water? The weight of the brick will not be in the water, but taken up by the bottom of the lake.

I understand now, after rereading, about the brick being in the water and the volume of the brick relating, versus the weight of the brick when held in the boat.

in addition, most bricks are water permeable, so eventually the water it displaces will be absorbed back into the brick, which will mean that the water level goes down a bit more.
