I didn't mean that it was anything you'd done. And I would agree that, unless you run hundreds of board feet of lumber through the planer every week, you should not wear out a set of cutters in your lifetime; maybe 2 lifetimes.
I don't know how much a whole new set of carbide cutters would cost, but it might be worth trying that just to eliminate the possibility that there was something wrong with the set that you got because of some problem during manufacture. (I agree that it's unlikely but unlikely things seem to be the only possibilities in this case.)
I assume that there is no play in the cutterhead; bed is flat; none of the cutter heads are loose; infeed/outfeed extension tables set (if you have them). Other than those things, I wouldn't be able to figure out anything else and would need to call a service company. Although it would probably cost $100 - $200 calling a local company who services Powermatic machines (if they exist in your area) might be worth it (maybe not either).
Ok, i processed a bit of walnut over the weekend, and saw very typical results off the byrd that i photographed. One image is off the planer(byrd head), and the other is the other face of the board off the jointer(tersa HSS, probably dull at this point).
