Driver update just appeared on my computer. I deleted it. I do not open anything that I did not bring up. I had to uninstall it.

@Lowell: I'm not disputing that you did nothing, but driver update is one of those adware items that hides itself in other downloads. There is a box to uncheck, but frequently, you have to have xray vision to see it.

When many programs are installed, they MAY also install other programs, such as Driver Update. Apparently you missed the check box to tell a program to NOT install it.
Other ones to watch out for are browser extensions and other addons.
Never, under any circumstances, consume a laxative and sleeping pill, on the same night

@Myk: Yes and free antivirus programs, too. The programs are generally legitimate, but if they install automatically, and you are already running another antivirus, you will likely get conflicts. McAfee is big on doing this.
