    Marking hinge placement for boxes

Just thought I’d share a method I’ve been using lately to help with box hinge marking. In the past, I would separate the lid from the box and then attempt to align them back together perfectly to mark hinge placement. I think I’ve tried every method to align lid with box as I could find, and they all seem to take me way too long fiddling to get perfect alignment.

Lately, I’ve been making an initial shallow cut where the lid will be separated. Then using a combination square, make a knife tic mark across the initial cut where I want the outside edge of the hinge to be. Then I complete the cut to remove the lid.

Doing it this way, I know the tic marks are exactly lined up and can go ahead and mark the outline for the hinges. I’ve found this to create a very accurate fit between lid and box.

Would be interested in hearing any other methods.

    Nice technique. Thanks for sharing.
Rustic? Well, no. That was not my intention!
