Electronic rat traps properly baited and emptied daily will save you $$. They are pricey but every time I use them they immediately catch and humanely kill both mice and rats.

We used to have mice problems with our boat in winter storage. On advice from the storage owner, we put the cheapest and stinkiest drier sheets we could find in all the boat's storage areas and have had no problems since. Under the hood of a car, you may have heat problems with these, but it may be worth a shot.
