Thirteen colonies enter the bloody struggle to break free from the crown, as British troops arrive in Lexington, Massachusetts, intent on seizing the patriots' weapons and imprisoning its leaders. Shots are exchanged, eight Americans die, and the war for independence is on.

Happy Patriot's Day! (It's a holiday in our neck of the woods-- but celebrated now on Monday, as is he way of such things) Each year the minutemen ring the church bells at about 3AM, gather in the town centers, and then march off (past our house) to re-enact the battle at the North Bridge in Concord. It's quite the to-do, and a lot of fun. One nice piece is that the British consul general and someone from the state-- usually the Lt. Governor, meet in the center of the bridge after the battle to exchange wreathes to honor the dead on each side and pledge eternal chumship. It's kind of fun that the captain of the Wayland company of minutemen lived in the house at the corner, maybe 100 yards from here.

Was playing genealogy some years ago, and was pleased to find my 6 greats grand dad led the salt riot in Caroline county MD, and raised a company of militia in the revolution there. Everyone who served in his company was a son, sil, or relative of some kind. You also had to be elected to serve as captain, which he did.

It's good to remember these things, nice to have a feeling for, and understanding of where you came from.

Now, when are you going to cast off the remainder of the English yoke and abandon the Imperial measurement system

As always, the perspective of history is determined by which side you were on, my American friends call it the War of Independence, we call it the revolutionary war.

Around here ,I'd say Revolutionary War is the prevailing term. The metric system is a fad.
