    Ziricote darkening

I recently completed a box using ziricote veneer. As I went to finish I used clear shellac and it went so dark it lost almost all of the beautiful grain so I sanded the shellac off and tried again with clear lacquer and got the same results. Is there a finish that will not darken the grain? I have thought of a water base but I hate to use water on veneer.

You might try one of the "hard wax" finishes. They don't seem to darken wood as much. My favorite is Osmo Top Coat.
