Small Cypress box, rounded corners, full blind dovetails

I was inspired by the table Derek built a couple months ago and wanted to build something with rounded corners. I picked out some nice cypress for the project. This is truly a pleasure to work with. It is quite soft but does not chip and can be tooled easily and gets a very nice sheen when planed. It is also available in 12" widths at a reasonable price in North Carolina. I decided on a small cabinet about 12x18x10, with three drawers. Carcase construction is full blind dovetails with 1/4" inset to allow for rounding the corners.

Pulls are walnut turned on the lathe and set with a wedged tenon in the drawer fronts.

The wood grain and finish give it a wonderful rustic charm, lovely proportions. Softwoods are far less forgiving to work!

Great job. I like the full blind dovetails. The best of both worlds, good mechanically and you don’t have to look at it.

Beautiful work, Michael! That is a complex and advanced build, and you pulled it off stunningly.

Nicely done, sir. Especially like the contrast on the drawer sides/front. Excellent.

    Derek,

Thank you for the kind words and for the inspiration.

Looks like a great gift. Not sure why cypress has such an apparently small following. I love the grain and work-ability of it.

Very nice, wish we could get some cypress out here in the west.

You get plenty of rain Jim. With "global warming" you may get some soon.
