Good week coring burls. evidence of

Our woodturning club had a tree removed from the front of the property. It was a soft maple with evidence of flat burls with numerous small trig like branches. I cored two pieces and have 7 thin bowls that I will microwave or will airbdry in a couple weeks. I use a McNaughton and am becoming fairly proficient in predicting the set up position for success. Here are some pictures of the results. Largest is 10” across x 7” deep.

I had to laugh a little at this - of course someone from the woodturning club had a tree with evidence of burls removed!

    Nice work on the cores!

Well the tree was 15” from the front porch. Took a boom truck to take it down. Here is two that I microwaved this morning and sanded this afternoon.

Bob that is beautiful wood. I have tried my McNaughty on some burls with less than spectacular results.

Got them all done. A family of seven from two chunks of soft maple burl. Two coats of wipe on poly with the rim painted with a coat of black lacquer. Love that coring option.

Thanks John. I’ll take coring burl wood any day. Much easier than cross grain.
