Traditional finish on a Morris chair

I plan on building some Morris style furniture, what would be the traditional style finish and the best method for application?

The original Morris chairs were made with English oak, with turned spindles. I gather many were stained in dark Victorian manner. The style quickly migrated to the US and many wre made in Sickley Craftsman fashion. That means lots of quartersawn oak slats and wood, with ammonia fuming for coloration that it not overly emphasize the ray flecks in the figure. Banana lacquer was the top coat coat a time. There are a number schedule that give attractive stickley type finishes. www.HomesteadFinishingProducts.com , Jeff Jewitts site has articles on a good Mission finish.
